The Phoenix - episode five - Asteroid Adversity
Fifth episode in a series set in the Chakat Universe on the commercial starship Phoenix.
The ship acquires an unusual apprentice before departing for its destination - the asteroid Hesperia - where the crew at last gets its promised shore leave. A derelict super freighter though spells possible disaster for not only the crew, but also the entire population of the city within an asteroid.

Actually it's rather distressing that a lock would be put on such a potential asphyxiation hazard in the elevator.
One would think in a situation like this, a way to open the elevator hatch would have been present. Though obviously a lot of oversight was present at this accident that now everyone will have to take a look at and think of ways to prevent it happening again.
Still, Heywood and Menalippe situation and death certainly are well written and thought out.
Nice work Goldfur.

It's just that kind of thing that gets overlooked in real life. No one considered the possibility of losing artificial gravity in combination with a failure of the elevator, so no one prepared for that. In fact, that was probably just one of several fatal flaws that came to light through Hesperia's crisis.

Horray! I've read one (or two) of the draft versions on Chakat Heaven. But when you said (on the Forum) that it was finished, I forced myself to wait until it was on the Den (so it would have picture(s)). Now that it is here, I'm going to savor it this evening. What a nice way to start my Easter vacation! Thanks
I hate to be nitpicky but when antimatter reacts with matter all that is produced is an enormous amount of thermal energy, and a lot of neutrinos, which barely interact with normal matter. So i cant see a conceivable way for antimatter to create an EMP.
Other than my obsessive nitpicking, this is up to your usual quality, very well written :3

Glad you liked the story. =^_^=
The reaction also produces an enormous amount of gamma radiation. We're also talking about an ideal situation with perfect results, but the scenario is not perfect. In truth, I'm not certain of the real life results, but I'm going to plead a little literary licence in this case.

A wonderful read as always, and with nice timing as it serves as a creativity injection. You got me to tear up a little with Yote's eulogy at the end there too...
And as another science geek, I don't find it improbable for a large antimatter detonation to create an EMP, given the massive amount of of electromagnetic radiation that would be released. It's basically the same concept as a high-altitude nuclear detonation (despite different reactions, fusion/fission and antimatter are still converting mass into energy), and there are a number of reasons Hysperia might have a magnetic field for the gamma radiation to interact with.

Just got a chance to read it today at lunch, was almost late getting back to work. Good story as always, but what a sad ending, though I guess it would be unrealistic to expect everyone to survive such a horrible event.
I did enjoy the use of telekinesis to ventilate the tunnel, what K ranking is Zelkie?

Cool, I was curious because I don't remember seeing too many other Chakat universe stories that had Telekinesis playing a large role and so have not had anyone to measure Bluesky against. Shi officially tests as a K3, because shi can't use hir talent on anything without touching it physically first, but for all other factors shi is a high K5 (or even a six if that exists).
Oh, I just remembered a question I had while reading. I know the Starwalkers have the third eyelid that will cover the eye and make it golden, but what color is the iris in Starwalkers?

SAD STORY and ending for 3 of the crew. I Sadly I don't think the hatch would be lockable like that though. It's a clear safety hazard that an emergency hatch would be locked like that. Frankly the Fed would point that out and say fix it. Yote should sue since it cause the death of two valuable crew members
I'd agree, although it's a service hatch, not an emergency exit. The idea is that emergency services could easily open it from the outside in case of elevator breakdown, so they keep it locked to stop people from misusing it. Of course nobody envisaged the entire city being incapacitated.
I finished reading this before sleeping last night. I'd suspected no one in the elevator would be saved; it seemed to be that kind of situation, but it was still a distressing shock -- I cried for a bit afterwards.
Few authors can provoke me to cry -- you're one of them. The ability to evoke such emotion in a reader is a sign of a truly great author, I think. Well done on another fine story. Now if only I could inject that kind of drama and conflict into my stories... I'm an idealist at heart.

Goldfur, is it possible you could make a list of the crew members with a link to their picture or post a link back to the first chapter with their names a pictures or post a link to the first chapter please? I hate to say it but I am having difficulty in remembering who are the main characters in this story.
Otherwise a great read!
