The skinny physique only adds to the feeling: it's the end of winter, and all food stocks are gone; I can understand his expression of exhaustion and endless hope, left at the mercy of nature. Dependence, reliance, care, respect. Am I reading it wrong? It's a very strong image nevertheless.
