because humans crave contact. It's too hard for pretty much anyone to be alone. Sometimes I think I'd like to be alone better, but I know I can never be really happy that way.

And in craving it humans hurt themselves. If both pain can no longer be seperate then it doesnt really matter if one doesnt have anything. People care for no one usually.

But by caring only for oneself, people usually end up caring for others. For example, I might try to make someone happy in order to make myself feel good. I'm only trying to make them happy because it makes me feel good, not out of selflessness. People only act in order to satisfy their own needs, but sometimes others are helped along the way, and we form bonds and connections =]
