Sounds to me he has a trust fund/other monetary compensation that hinges on the male child. Inheritance, of some sort most likely.

His family, his Mother specifically, gives him a level of money, and by extension, privilage, by creating the heir to the family and doing so with a minimum of public scandal.

What a completely selfish asshat. She should be suing for divorce and getting rid of him ASAP. Couple of minutes of candid videos like this should be plenty to convince the judge. Sorry for her, some, but she was an adult when she entered the realtionship. The kid is the real victim. Alphie seems to be something like a slave, so is helpless victim also.

As for Maria, she was suckered into the relationship in that his brand of sociopathology can be superficially charming as long as it suits his ends.

This is a guy that's (possibly deliberately) divorced from reality. (Unfortunately I know of someone like him. I'm only sorry he's getting out of paying alimony after paying it for 1/5 as long as he was married.)

Keep in mind this is a short story, so the characters need to be written kind of broadly. There's not enough room to have gradual character development over the course of dozens of pages or multiple chapters.

Though kind of plopping it all out at once instead of developing the character like Roz says, that guy is based on people I've known, almost to the point of quotes. The breath and depth of awfulness in RL people far exceeds most writer's imainations...
