"Something feels off about the reflections in the gold. Any ideas?"
Googled pictures of the character and I think I know what it is. On some of the tiny bars, you got the brightest parts varying on either the top or bottom. What La Forge has is a gradual increase in reflection brightness as you travel horizontally. I think it's more like metal slits that only look like lines head on, but reflect more as more of the sides of each are reflected in the light.
For reference, it's this image I'm looking at: http://erthstationone.files.wordpre.....aforge2367.jpg
Light has a lot to do with the visor. I bet you can get a lot of hints from the reflection of the top and bottom rims as to not only where the light is hitting, but also the kind of lights (spot lights I think). I would imagine this can be tricky to fully replicate either way.
