My facility doesn't have an SRT, we're all trained in cell extractions and other forms of special response. (I've always thought this was strange, given our size and the types of people we house).
I thought a little background story would be kinda cool:
It's about 2030 hrs. All has been going smoothly throughout the facility, and 2nd shift is looking forward to 2300 and being able to enjoy the warm summer night that waits beyond the doors. All is not well on Delta Unit. Most of the 150 inmates have conspired to instigate a riot and take over the unit, a reponse they feel is adequate, given their visits have been cancelled for disciplinary reasons three weeks in a row. A single milk carton is thrown across the upper tier: the signal to begin. This is a direct supervision unit. The five officers quickly see that they cannot quell the sudden orgy of violence, kill their control panel, hit the panic switch, and vacate the unit, but not before two are hurt by makeshift projectiles and one is severely injured by a bladed weapon. Once the situation can be understood, the shift supervisor notifies the superintendant, who authorizes the SRT to be activated. 25 year old officer Braden Helmsley is among the newest members, having been with the team only six months. The inmates have barricaded the main entrance and the emergency doors. Fortunately, maintenance is able to open the emergency doors on the upper tier. The team is briefed and assembles at the two doors. As they open, a volley of pepper balls, sting balls, and flashbangs descend into the unit. As they take effect, a deafening cacaphony of screaming inmates and exploding ordnance erupts. The team bursts through the doors, using OC and beanbag rounds to dispatch those who are still non-compliant. Adding to the disarray, the inmates have taken advantage of the chaos to settle scores among themselves, and several lie bleeding from stab wounds. The air is thick with the biting mist of OC. Several team members tend to the wounded inmates. The team places compliant inmates in zip ties, as those who have lost the will to fight retreat to their cells and lock-in. However, a small group backs to the rear of the unit, armed with large bladed weapons, refusing to surrender: the same inmates who severely injured the unit officer. The superintendant makes the call. The team commander gives the order for his shotgun-wielding officers to load buckshot into their weapons. Officer Helmsley is the first up the stairs. Drenched in sweat underneath his suit and armor, his heart racing, he commands the cornered inmates to relinquish their weapons, and informs them that his shotgun contains live rounds, his commander having authorized deadly force. One attempts to break from the group but is stabbed by the others before he can get away. Officer Helmsley levels his shotgun and prepares to fire...
