Is it a Monarch or is it a Viceroy? Who knows, even trained professionals have trouble telling the difference sometime.

I'd say it's a Viceroy, only because I hardly see many Monarchs with such distinct while markings.

That one's a Viceroy, you can tell by the black patches that extend a bit further into the wings.

However, you're right that they do look quite similar.

Actually, looking at some photos on Wikipedia and other sites... it's quite possible I'm wrong... Apparently Viceroy's look a lot more like monarch's than I thought initially, as well as a couple other species in some states...

The one sure way that I know to tell, is to eat one. Viceroys dont eat milkweed so they don't have the acidic burn that Monarchs have.

Hmm, if Wikipedia is to be believed Viceroy's aren't very edible themselves, actually, so that's probably not the best way to tell...

Ah, I know these, pretty common in germany, but not as common as the Yellow ones, we call them "Zitronenfalter".
