What is it about science fiction and its very negative view of science and technology? I mean, this is a genre where the main audience are people who love science and technology, yet a big chunk of it is spent detailing how every new piece of technology we develop will end civilization or fuck us up in some ways.
and I don't buy the idea that that is simply what makes a good story, I've read a few sci fi books that didn't take the "Frankenstein" approach, and they where great!

Well, have you heard about the singularity? It is a hypothetical future scenario that comes up in science fiction and the like where we manage to construct an artificial intelligence that has greater than human capacity.
The reason this is such a big deal is because after that point is reached, nobody knows what the hell will happen. We quite litterary are not smart enough to know what a super-human intelligence could accomplish. It could turn out that we've made ourselves obsolete, or it could be the solutions to problems we never thought we'd have the capacity to solve.
The idea that this AI have is, essentially, that people might find the change that would come from actually having a GLaDOS or a SHODAN on our side more unsettling and hard to deal with than the thought of an AI that simply wants to kill us.
