There's a Navy Axiom - you learn more by teaching others. I believe this holds true.
An acquaintance (friend of a friend) was struggling the other evening. Friend of a Friend, so offered to give them a few pointers. I'm no expert, but I attempted to explain the process of reference shapes and proportions...
... not sure I was 100% successful, but between that and demonstrating what I was trying to explain via text (Next time I'm using voice - that was a bit painful and frustrating to try to explain...) their sketch seemed to improve quite a bit.
Anywho, this was the rough I was using to illustrate the points I was trying to get across. Not perfect, but this wasn't intended to be - just a demonstration of technique and thought process behind it. The upper-foreleg front shoulder needs reworking at the least plus a few other things. Ran out of time before I could explain that portion of refining... and theirs was actually pretty decent on their sketch so it was low-priority to fix.
I'm sure there's some professional art types out there who would wince at this, but it's a start. In any case, will move to scraps in the morning once I know they have a copy of this for reference.
