Ponies! Ponies everywhere! And, well, I'm cool with that ^_^
My own pony-sona, Zap, was in need of some artwork, so when I discovered I was sitting next to Kabuki in FWA's Artist Alley this year, I decided to commission her once again for ponies.
This features Zap on a casual flight with Fluttershy (my favorite of the FiM mane six). I just love how happy they look ^_^

Agreed. Levitation, the natural ability of unicorns, is, when used on oneself, an acceptable substitute for flight in some cases, but it's not nearly equal to the wings of a pegasus.
Takeoff is difficult, and the duration of the flight itself depends entirely on the user's magical capacity. Landing safely is completely out of the question. Is my character the only one who knows how to do this? Is he the first to have tried? Quite possibly, yes.

It would take quite a bit of practice to reach the point that my character has reached. And he can only fly for a few seconds. A minute, tops.
Although, it's actually no problem to go as fast as RD... But only by using magic like a slingshot. All in one quick burst. Absolutely no control.

If I wrote a story about how Kitsune got his magic-draining power, would you read it? It happened a long time ago, and involves the princesses, the Elements of Harmony, a secretly evil unicorn court wizard, and one of Kitsune's oddly similar ancestors (Kitsune himself is not that old!). It's kind of a sad story...
..."A lot of folks"? Nobody ever reads anything that I write. For example, my Pokemon Black and White story. At this point, chapter one has a mere 17 views, chapter two has 15, chapter three has 9, 10 for four, five has 11, ditto for six, and the most recent chapter has only 2. A maximum of 17 is not "a lot of folks".
It can be hard to get writing noticed on an art-centered site like FA. Some writers do it, but there are few (among which I am not, so I know what you're going through ). There are a couple places out there you could try, like for the MLP story you mentioned you could submit it at a site that caters more toward ponies, since here on FA it's a bit of a niche fandom. Canterlot.com is a site I frequent and is known to host writers. Ask around, I'm sure some people can point you to some more writing-centered places to feature your work.
And most of all, keep writing. The more you put out there, the more opportunities there are for people to notice. No one gets a lot of views starting out; it builds from constant work that grows over time :)

I'm not posting it on FA, though. I'm going to post it on dA. That's where my other stuff is. The only things I put here on FA are my Pokemon haiku (in Pokedex order) and the few stories that are... Not allowed on dA... And my PCA stuff, but that's a different account.
Regardless, I guess I'll try something like that. Couldn't hurt, could it? But... first I'd need a few names. I've got Celestia, Luna, and Kitsune's ancestor (conveniently named "Kitsune") (Kindness, Generosity, and Honesty, respectively), so I still need the other three Elements: the royal court jester (earth pony, Laughter), the Captain of the Royal Guard (male pegasus pony, Loyalty), and the aforementioned secretly evil court wizard (female, Magic). I'm terrible with naming.

Well, look on the bright side: You're better with names than I am. My name is a portmanteau of Ruby, my birthstone and (then-)favorite Pokemon game, and Boo, my favorite Mario character (who you can see in my avatar to the left). My fursona's name (as well as everyone else who's not my Mario-sona) is the Japanese word for "fox". Can you guess his species?
