Holy crap was this a massive undertaking! You have no idea how awesome this image is and how well it came along to what I wanted.
Backstory: The golden drake woke just before the sun came up. He was used to being up early, before the rest of his squad. He didn't even mind it anymore. It gave him a chance to stretch, and angle himself just right for the coming light. It also gave him ample time to look over the sleeping squad, and make sure they were ok.
After a bit, a few of the squad started to stir. Three of them were near the fire, soaking up the last of the warmth if had to offer. Another had left to take care of his morning business, only to return to an interloper in his tent. The black one had just wandered back into the camp, and three drakes laid sleeping still, huddled under a canvas, keeping the cold away with each other's body.
The long gold smiled down at the lazy movements this morning. He liked to give them these moments in the morning, and every chance he could after. They were led into battle daily by him, and he took his protector role very seriously. After so much fighting together, they were as close as family. They took their meals together, had their share of arguments, and always looked after one another.
As the grey light of night shifted towards the golden light of dawn, the gold drake shifted and leaped towards the camp, gliding down to them. It was time to don the day's armor, and ready themselves for yet another battle.
