Having come to a truce with Captain Firewing http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7483135/ in my Equestria dreamscape http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7573286 we wrapped up my flight evaluation and headed back to Sweet Apple Acres. It was getting on in the afternoon when we finally landed back at the farm, and the Captain was correct when he assumed that my instructor would be getting worried about me. Dash who was talking to Applejack when we touched down she immediately broke off her conservation with AJ and made a beeline for the Captain and I. With a slightly nervous grin on her face she greeted both of us. "Welcome back you two. So, Captain I see my student has returned in one piece. How did he do? Was there any issues during the evaluation I need…" The Captain who once again had that inscrutable stoic expression on his face interrupted the mare's rambling speech with a bark. "Rainbow Dash!" Dash's mouth slammed shut like a steel trap and she went silent. Captain Firewing coughed once and then pointed at me with his right front hoof and continued in a calmer voice.
"Am I to understand that you have been spending every day instructing Brick. Oops! I meant Sky Brush for the last two months." Dash nodded her head quickly, the slightest hint of dread creeping back into her eyes, I remained silent. The Captain grunted and continued his delivery. "So what I have observed today during my evaluation is suppose to be the fruits of your efforts?" I grudgingly remained quiet. My evaluation was over. What Dash did not realize was that her's was beginning. Rainbow quickly glanced over at me as if to gain some input from me. I tried to remain deadpan and gave her the slightest nod. She swallowed and in a firm voice said. "Yes Captain Firewing." Firewing nodded and then began to slowly walk around the young mare while continuing his speech. "And this is what you have to show for it?" The Captain cocked his head over at me. Once again Dash nodded silently and was rewarded with a grunt from the Captain. "Ugh. You were given specific instructions by none other than Princess Celestia to make certain that Sky Brush here would be able to fly without endangering himself and any other pony or property within the borders of Equestria is that not true?" At the mention of the Celestia's name Rainbow Dash's breathing became quicker and her ears noticeably drooped. "Yes Captain Firewing." She replied in a small voice. The Captain finished his last orbit of her and came to halt directly in front of her. For several seconds he just stared silently at her holding in his stare. Slowly he leaned forward toward until his muzzle was almost touching hers.
"Well he is no Wonderbolt, but he is not an immediate threat to himself or any of the Royal Sisters subjects so he passes." It took a second for his comments to seep into Dash's slightly addled brain, but then you could slowly watch the smile spread across her face. "So you are happy with his performance and my training?" She asked brightly. "Don't get cocky you little filly." Growled the Stallion. "He has a long way to go but he has gotten off on the right hoof. However he will continue to need lots of training and support to get him up to full speed. Remember it is when something becomes routine that you start growing lax and start taking risks without totally understanding the potential consequences. That is when you are at the greatest risk. As Sky Brush's instructor it is critical that you instill the right sense discipline in him so that he doesn't become complacent." Then he looked over at me."And you Brick. You need to take everything your instructor says to heart. If you want to live and be an old pegasus stallion. Got it!" I just smiled and nodded. "Yes Captain!"
Through all of this Applejack had politely stayed in background but not out of earshot. With the evaluation officially drawing to a close she moseyed over to us with a huge grin on her face. "Well congratulations Sky Brush! And you to RD! I think this calls for a bit of a celebration, and I have just the thing. Follow me! You to Captain." With that she led us across the barnyard to a cellar built into the side of the barn. Throwing open two red doors on the ground painted in the same color as the barn she led us down into the cool dark depths of the cellar. "We just finished cider pressing and of course most of it sells within a few days of making it, but we always save a bit for special occasions. And this sure feels like one to me!" Rearing up on her hind legs the orange she pointed over with one front hoof at me and Rainbow Dash. "Would you two be so kind as to grab four mugs for us. Then she turned and grabbed a large glazed stoneware jug by a lanyard tied around with her teeth off a nearby shelf. With a bit of searching Dash and I found four simple mugs finished in the same glazed stoneware material. With jug and mugs secured we all headed back up the stairs.
Now Sweet Apple Acres Cider is renowned around Ponyville, Canterlot and beyond, but after a hard day of flying it was about the best thing I'd ever had. Not too sweet, not too tart. We just sat outside the barn and watched as Celestia's great sphere slowly sank toward the horizon behind the rain clouds that were being prepared for the 7pm showers tonight. Through the clouds the setting sun sent glorious shafts golden light. It was a good ending to a very stressful day. Now officially off the clock Captain Firewing was bit more relaxed and talkative. He was hardly the life of the party but he wasn't a stick in mud either. After about half hour of enjoying Sweet Apple Acres finest I felt compelled to ask him. "Captain, why is your name Firewing anyways?" Because of his armor I couldn't see his cutie mark and that had been a nagging question in my mind all day. The Captain gave a sly grin. "Sky Brush you understand the principle of pegasus projection magic don't you?" I thought for a moment then replied. "Yeah it is the ability that allows pegasus to manipulate and construct clouds. It is why only a dozen or so pegasus can move a cloud bigger than mile in size. It projects like an invisible net from our hooves and wings. In much the same way an earth pony can directly effect the growth cycle of an entire field of plants. Right?" Firewing took a long slow swig of cider before replying. "Yes that is the general definition of pegasus projection magic, but it is more than. It doesn't just work to let us make and move clouds or walk on them. It lets us manipulate the very atmosphere itself in localize area. Humidity, barometric pressure can controlled to some degree by use of it. It is part of what makes Rainbow Dash's Sonic Rainboom possible. It can also be used to energize and focus the atmosphere in very specific ways. Allow me to demonstrate."
He looked around the barnyard for a moment then settled on sizable pile of recently dug up weeds, brambles and scrub about 150 feet away. Pointing at it with one hoof he asked Applejack. "M'am does that pile of weeds have any special significance to you or your family?" AJ stared at for a second. "Na! It is just a bunch of weeds and junk we're going to burn in the next day or so." Rising to his hooves the Captain smiled at AJ. "Then allow me to relieve you of the burden." With that he launched himself into the now golden and pink twilight sky. In this light his white coat was an amber yellow and his golden segmented and scale armor positively glowed. He made several tight circuits of barnyard as he eyed his target. At the end of his fourth orbit he suddenly shot up almost vertically into the air far faster than I imagined possible for a pegasus in so much armor. Within a few seconds he was over thousand feet above Sweet Apple Acres. At the apogee of his climb he slowed to almost a halt and rolled over the top in a hammer head stall maneuver. Now he was plunging almost straight down at the pile of defenseless weeds and scrub. As I watched him plummet toward the ground I could see that the Captain's eyes were positively glowing and his wings were now sheathed in roiling flames. At the last second he pulled up about hundred feet above the pile dead plant life. As he did the flames surrounding his wings coalesced sphere of boiling plasma that shot toward the ground with amazing speed. The pile of weeds vanished in a deafening thud and flash. The good Captain did a quick roll and then glided down and landed in front us. So that is why call him Firewing. We all just sat there and silently and somewhat stunned as the remains of the pile burned.
The Captain came over, sat down just resumed drinking his cider. Completely ignoring the smoldering remains in the barnyard; after taking a sizable swig of cider he continued speaking in an almost lecture-hall fashion. "Now what I showed you there is an extreme example, and it is my area of expertise." He took another gulp of cider. " This is really good cider. Where was I? Oh right. It does demonstrate how projection magic can be applied to achieve results not usually discussed in the textbooks. Of course it does help that another of my special talents is a resistance temperature both hot and cold, or else I would've charred my wings to a crisp coming down out of that dive. And that would've been the end of Captain Firewing."
"That was so awesome!" Rainbow Dash squealed in a that happy schoolfilly voice her eyes fixed on the charred spot in the barnyard. She then looked over at Captain Firewing with big wide eyes. "Why have I never seen the Wonderbolts do that in one of their performances and would you teach me how to do that! Ppuuullllleeeezzze!" The Captain looked a Dash and shook his head. "You haven't seen any of the current Wonderbolts perform it because none of them have the talent for it. Like I said it is my area of expertise, and besides even when I was member of the team I did not perform it because it is was considered too dangerous for areas with large crowds. Also, I was only able to refine it with personal instruction from Princess Celestia, and she has decided that it is not a talent to be used for flash in shows." The Captain stopped for a moment and solemnly looked at Celestia's setting sun before continuing. "I usually only use it for serious matters of the Crown. Not to impress other ponies." He said that last lines very quietly. After a second or so of silence he slugged back the last of his cider and got to his hooves. "Well I have matters to attend to back at the palace, and besides Sky Brush you need to get home before the sun sets unless you feel like walking and then you'll probably get caught out in the rain." With that he bowed to Applejack and Rainbow Dash. "Ladies it has been a pleasure to enjoy this cider and your company for awhile." Then with no further comment he launched himself into the early evening sky and headed toward Canterlot.
"Am I to understand that you have been spending every day instructing Brick. Oops! I meant Sky Brush for the last two months." I begin to understand just why pegasi were and to some extent are the warrior caste in Equestria. It's more than just a command of the high ground that makes them so dangerous!
Though I do wonder, given what sort of a sugar bowl of a world Equestria usually is (aside from temporary problems like Discord or Nightmare Moon), what the heck does Celestia and her little ponies need with a military anyway? Maybe the next time you see Firewing you can ask him.

I don't think Equestria is that much of a sugar bowl world given that there are dangerous monsters present (not to mention an entrance to the pony underworld about a day's travel away from Ponyville), and that the dragons in the latest episode demonstrated that they are a rather violent and dangerous species, especially when young. But what's especially telling is that it appears that violence is not entirely unknown to ordinary Equestrian citizens. A friend of mine pointed out that in the second part of the first story arc, the Mane Six fearlessly charge a manticore and even deliver a swift kick to its jaw (and done by Rarity, of all ponies!) So I can see why the Royal Guard exists, most likely to defend the realm against monster incursions and possibly even the occasional bad apple within pony society. I tend to think that despite that, Equestrian society as a whole is rather peaceful and close-knit, especially when compared to most human societies, but it's not sunshine and cupcakes all the time.
You're right, and I forgot about Rarity (of all ponies) being willing to kick a manticore in the jaw.
I would add though, that the Ponyville ponies may well be different from the rest of Equestria in their attitudes, given that they live next door to the Everfree Forest AKA Monster Central.
And that entrance to Tartarus right close by Ponyville; yeesh, why the heck did the Apples even settle there in the first place? Maybe they thought that the occasional bit of monster fighting would keep the family on their toes, er, hooves?

Yes and remember you don't have to do fantastic things like spew plasma balls from your wings to really mess with your enemies. Especially if you are willing to play the long term game. Like mess with someones harvest by denying them rain, or making it rain at the wrong time. On the battlefield a bit of ground fog at a certain time could mask movements or let you flank an enemy without them knowing.

Well I am left with the impression that there is lots that happens on Equestria borders that is not shown in the show because. A. It is a show for 7 year old kids and. 2. It is too far away from Ponyville to make the news, and besides when Celestia decides to use force I imagine it being a bit more surgical in nature than total war.

That reminds me of one of the fanfics in which Nightmare Moon beat her sister; she conquered her neighbors not by sending the troops in, but just by having her pegasi ravage their crops with inclement weather.
Hmm, if someone else could learn weather control magic in Equestria, the pegasi might find their services less valued than normally.

And now I imagine what would happen to a more earthly power (as compared to the Lord of Shadows) who tried to enslave the ponies. I have the idea that Celestia would warn them once, and if they press their luck after that, it's ce la vie.

I noticed in "It's About Time" that the guards in that building were unicorns. Probably more suited to indoors and close-quarters conflict than pegasi, who sometimes need plenty of room to move (not to mention the primary security threat to that building: malevolent magic-users). And for dealing with threats that are immune or resistant to unicorn magic, I imagine earth pony troops might be deployed. Of course, everypony would have to be proficient in hoof-to-hoof combat, whatever their primary ability.

It's a lot easier to hit a ground target when you don't have to worry about your weapon having a ballistic arc. Vertical dives are more accurate, but the pilot needs to worry a lot more about overstresssing the airframe in a pullout. And not having to deal with visibility out of the airframe when you're aiming is a real help. I still have problems dropping long in Aces High when I'm making jabo runs.
Man! I really love the look of concentration on his face in that dive. Such intensity. Also, I guess the military in Equestria are often ignored sentinals of the realm. What was that old Japanese expression? "The samurai serve in silence"? Something like that. I suppose there is a necessary humility in their profession.
It has been my experience that many of the individuals who I have met who serve in the Elite or Special Forces is that they have a certain humility to them. For them they have very little need to brag and do not feel it necessary to boast about their achievements. Even if they were often under orders not to talk about them.
My thought are that it's part of the training. Yes, to most people it's extraordinary, but to them it's the job they've been trained for. They're focused on improving above even those high standards (another part of the training), and boasting is counter-productive.
Service in general, when done properly, should be virtually invisible to the recipient. Failing to recognize that service was done becomes a bit of a back-handed (-hooved?) compliment. But failing to respect those who provide services is an insult born of rampant egotism.

looked at your drawing, and I believe that Firewing's problem is that he's not trying nearly hard enough.
Um....please clarify?
I love your use of foreshortening to create that perspective. Combined with the details and the dive just "pops" so very well.
How long did this one take you
That took about 50 minutes to do all told. However that was after about ten minutes of determining how I would go about doing it.

Also, "being capable of manipulating atmospheric parameters" are now headcannoned as a pegasus ability. xD
It will be interesting if this week's episode does anything to verify or shoot down some of the ideas my subconscious thinks about how weather manipulation works.

Hm, agree. It's annoying when the canon shoots down well-made headcanon, and awesome when they introduce concepts that justify it.
For example, the general theory of relativity is canon, as shown by "It's about time". As such, we can safely assume that pony society is capable of rather advanced physics.
Say, do you have a headcanon on how the whole "raising the sun and raising the moon" thing works? I have my own, physically consistent, one, and I wondered how you've solved it :3

I can see how that move could be formidable in combat, but no attack is completely without faults that could be exploited; I imagine he'd have a hard time conducting this maneuver during foul weather such as rain, and also RD's 'rainbow tornado' move could rob him of oxygen needed for the flames to burn.
Dive bombers have weaknesses, too. (The long set-up dive is necessary for accuracy, leaving him vulnerable to counter-attack.) So does "napalm" and incendiaries. (Neither does much to penetrate hard armor.) Chess is considered a parallel to combat for good reason -- it's all about balancing strengths and weaknesses, as well as out-thinking your opponent.
The Elements of Harmony may be one of the few forces in Equestria that can't be countered, and that's assuming they aren't blocked before being initiated.
