"Listen up, guys. There's no telling what this other team's capable of, so for the time being we stick to our strengths. Charla, ready that Thunder Fang of yours!"
"Way ahead of you!"
"Floritt, did you Sketch up those extra moves from your brother like I asked you to?"
"Ya, mon! One Triple Kick comin' up!"
"Nigel, I need you to--oh, nevermind, you're already using Protect."
"You watch, DeCinder. I'll win us this match, one way or another. I can't afford to lose here."
"...Right, good to see you have your team spirit with you for one. So then that just leaves yours truly to ready some Fire Punches and we're all set. Ready, Crossroaders? ...GO!"
--
This is, strangely enough, bunch of doodles from various attempts at giving tribute to the
pokecombatacademy exam battles that didn't really work in their original incarnations (in Charla's case, she's from a unfinishes oC session) but I thought were decent enough to use anyway...but not alone. Thus, this collage-thing was born.
And yes, they're all wearing their uniforms for once! ...though now I need to do extra pics for Nigel and Floritt to show theirs from the front. Sigh.
For the record, this ain't the tribute pic. That will have to be drawn up another day, once I get a far more solid idea for it.

I was only gonna PM because its semi-unrelated to the pic and i didn't want to detract from it, but here it goes :)
1. (Question based on Nigel's use of "Protect") Are certain defensive moves (Protect, Mirror Coat, Magic Coat, Calm Mind, Etc.) usable on teammates in the PCA-verse or do they still only effect the user?
2. Are PCA pokemon limited to the usual 4 moves known at a time?

Bah, that's fine. And hey, might as well share here in case anyone else wants those questions answered.
1. I want to say no. Nigel uses Reflect and Light Screen for actually protecting his team while in battle (and for himself when he's not), while Protect only affects him. For Nigel to even think of using Protect in a fight is a bit of a big deal, since it indicates he means business --he's not just gonna stand around buffing up the others this time.
2) As far as I know, the consensus is "These are Pokemorphs, why would genetically superior Pokemon be limited to just the four moves?". There's no set max number, as far as I know...though I *myself* take a cue from a Pokemorph roleplaying MUSH in terms of how they handle movelists, which is "Anything the species can learn naturally + up to four TM or Egg moves". With couple of exceptions:
Smeargle, because of their Sketch move can, theoretically, learn any move imaginable. Of course, they can only learn by means of others (or Egg moves), so one has to think as to what said character could ICly learn. Sure you can have yours know Hyper Beam, but that implies they once had to fight a Gyarados or something to learn it from!
Delibird, Feebas, Abra, etc. can only learn a pathetically small number of moves naturally, so it'd make sense for them to be allowed a few more TM or Egg moves just to give them a fighting chance.
Magikarp...um, Spash and Tackle. Hurray for you.
You get the idea, I hope :)

I think there was a general guideline of about 4 per grade level, so freshman would know about 4, sophomores 8, juniors 12, and seniors 16. But these are just guidelines of course. Some might know more or less depending on background and training. And some might have abilities that, while in the flavor and ability of the pokemorph, don't quite match any "official" moves. One of the benefits of being bound by imagination and not game programming.
Huh, first I hear of this. In any case, I only mentally have about 8 "set" moves for each of the Crossroaders (Save for Floritt, whose moveset is only described as "mostly Fighting-type moves, especially kicking-based ones like Rolling Kick"). I may just go and consider this guideline for myself. Come to think of it, I have no moves set for the Bistro team yet, or any of the Board members or faculty...except Buster, who knows Teleport and OHGODITSISSTARINGINTOMYSOUL.
As for the "made up" abilities, I'm a bit leery of that. I myself like to stick to game mechanics as much as I can, barring it's not something that is next to impossible to take seriously (for example, the whole *everyone in the Poke-World was born from eggs* thing). I can see it for non-attack type tricks, though....and moves like Tickle. Yes, tickling is considered an *attack* in the later games, one not learned by many critters. This is just silly for a morph to not be able to learn by themselves. Fly is also silly for certain aerial-based Pokemorphs to not know the basics of, if not out and out mastery (same with Water-types and Surf).

Well for example, Tenebra has one (she doesn't use much) where she releases a black, blinding mist over her opponents. There isn't quite anything in the game that does that, to my knowledge. Though Shadow Mist might be close. But I see no reason why she wouldn't be able to do it. Though I agree that such should be done sparingly.
I'm sure future versions of the game will come up with new moves, who's to say the 'morphs can't do the same? :)

Truuuuue. And admittedly I didn't consider looking to CCG-exclusive moves, just the ones in the actual video games. As for Tenebra's move, closest thing Mightyena has to one of those is Sand-Attack....and unless you have extra-icky black sand on you, that probably won't cut it. Haze or Smokescreen would have been perfect, but I don't think it learns either.
You're right about learning new moves, though. Or even make new moves by combining existing ones together. Really, that's the beauty of 'morphs right there, it opens up new possibilities in how the Pokemon fight. It was that very element that drew me in in the first place!
(P.S. What about Dark Pulse? It's pretty much this freakish wave of dark energy that can hit pretty hard and makes foes flinch from having that power enveloping them. Not exactly what you described, but I could see Tenebra knowing something like that, easy.)
