I'd wanted to do something a little like Ron Spencer's cover for "Rage Across Egypt" - which was an awesome splatbook, and it had an awesome cover. The big visual element that got me was the big diagonal, which had this off-center feel and allowed for more figures, more going on. I'd never tried doing mummies before, and the Ammut-styled mummy was inspired by the crudely stitched guys who show up in the short story "Entombed with the Pharaohs."
I got the idea and started work while listening to richly thematic stuff like "Songs from the Victorious City." Thing is, I've also been in a Frank Zappa mood lately, so about halfway through pencilling, my brain decided to play "Why Does It Hurt When I Pee?" on repeat. Least appropriate music ever.
