Hear that lonesome whippoorwill, he sounds to blue to fly, the midnight train, is whining low, Im so lonesome I could cry
"Tell me, Talon, can you?"
The small boy blinked confused as he looked at his older mentor leaning his head upon the palm of his hand. "Tell you what, master Favian?"
The older man moved around to the other side of the darkened mahogany desk- well worn fingers setting upon its flat surface as he drew in a sigh. He turned his silvery eyes to his young ward as two curious green eyes looked back at him. "Can you tell me the reasons behind a whippoorwill's song? Why it cries?"
"Is it because its sad?" The young boy asked kicking his feet as he sat on the chair. "It sounds pretty sad..."
"Well yes, it does... but why do you think that is?"
The red haired boy thought for a moment, hand to his chin, before shaking his head. "I dont know Master Favian..."
"Do tell me when you find out, would you?" Favian asked as he took his hands from his desk and moved them instead to gently shoo the younger boy from his room, putting a hand upon a small shoulder and helping him from the chair. "Now- Im sure your mother is wondering where you've gone off to."
Talon nodded and smiled. "Can I come back again tomorrow? Maybe I'll know the answer then."
Favian smiled. "You can come back whenever you'd like."
Seeming pleased with that response Talon grinned and turned to run out of the house- Favian followed to the doorway of the room to make sure he knew the way to the front door, but he was sure the boy knew by now, he was here so often it seemed as though Talon lived here. But even Favian knew that that would never be possible, the mentor was a secret, the visits were secret, and for all anyone knew the young child was simply spending time in the woods.
Favian watched with an almost longing sensation as the young child closed the door behind him. Without Talon he felt so unbearably alone, and with a sigh he turned to go back in his study- and close the door.
Once outside of the quaint house Talon grabbed his gear again- hooking his little knife back into his belt- as the older man didnt allow weapons inside his domicile. And when Talon asked him why this was, he did not answer and merely told him to leave it outside, and that he must always leave it outside if he ever wanted to enter. And the boy simply didnt argue.
The sun had nearly set by the time Talon made it back to his small home in his cozy village, it had its advantages being so close to a forest since food was easy to find. But it was also much more dangerous. And the boy had heard many stories about ignorant children who were stolen in the night by jackals and wolves. And the only reason that he had not joined them yet was because of Favian. Warming up his hands with a short burst of flame from his mouth the boy waved away the leftover smoke- then moved to open his door and step inside.
"And just where have you been??" Came a question from the kitchen. As small as his house was the entrance and the kitchen were still seperate, but close together- so anyone coming in or leaving would be noticed.
"I was in the woods mother." It wasnt a lie, Favians house was in the woods.
His mother looked at him, She feels supiscious about this answer as thats what she always hears from him. But she doesnt believe it, recently her son has changed- hes more polite, more kind, more...she doesnt know. But her insticts tell her something is going on that Talon is not telling her.
Talon tilted his head. "Why are you looking at me like that?"
His mother blinked, was she looking at him oddly? "Nothing Talon...Go wash up for dinner- and tell your little brother to do the same."
"Alright" The boy turned to go into the bedroom he and his brother Bojan shared- pushing aside the haysewn door. "Bojan? Mother wants us to get ready for dinner."
The smaller redhead looked up at Talon, he looked almost exactly like his brother except smaller- Fire red hair, and Green emerald eyes surrounded by a rounded almost heart shape face. If Bojan wasnt a few years younger they would be mistaken for twins. He had been drawing on some sort of animal hide with a charcoal rock in the middle of his floor. "Okay." He moved to stand up and tossed his drawing tool aside moving over to his brother.
"What were you drawing?" Talon asked trying to figure out what the lines on the hide even were supposed to be.
"A bird."
"Oh."
"It was singing outside my window..." The smaller boy said as he pointed to the window over on the other side of the room. "It sounded sad though.."
"I wonder why."
Bojan shook his head. "I dont know."
Talon stopped a moment, as though the conversation he had with Favian was now seeping into his life, His brother had never thought of birds before, nor had he ever drawn anything. Bojan wasnt an artist of any kind...but now that question seemed to be following him everywhere.
Was the answer REALLY that important?
