The main character could have defeated the dragon to earn his place among the Radiant Knights. Slaying a dragon of any condition is worthy of fame and recognition. Nonetheless, the main character is a truly noble soul, and will absolutely not do battle with a foe that is clearly in no condition to defend itself.
In the final panel, we see just how deeply the sudden comment shakes him. We shall see why as time goes on.

What the dragon said is spot-on; there is no honor in fighting and killing someone who cannot even defend himself. (Whether there's honor in fighting and killing a dragon who IS able to do that is another matter, I suppose.)
Given that he still could've realized his dreams by killing the helpless dragon, anyway, you have to respect him all the more for not doing it. Doing what is right and honorable is commendable; doing it despite the consequences you'll have to face yourself is even more so. It takes conviction and a sense of ethics to do that, things that not everyone has.
