baron munchausen is a german character in quasi-modern fairy tales who's known for his absolutely ludicriously unbelievable exploits. one is going to the moon, where the king of the moon rides some crazy three-headed gryphon thing. terry gilliam did a movie about him a while back.
he's also the source of the now antiquated psychological term of 'munchausen by proxy'
