That's an interesting thought. Looking at his coloring, I see that he usually invests a lot of work in a very sculpted, high-relief approach. While his style is very professional and detailed, such a high-gloss finish can be hard on the eyes, and what you end up getting is a situation where it's hard to see the whole character rather than an assembly of parts.
Also, I think this piece benefits from this color approach because of its atmosphere. I wonder if CM's actually considered trying new coloring approaches, but doesn't get much opportunity because of the fandom's expectations.
