Here I am again learning to drive 'Lady Nan' on the East Somerset Railway. As you can imagine, I can be seen in the centre of the cab in the dark red sweater and white hat.

Hey. If you're savvy enough to know the difference between the throttle and the brakes, and you know where the level of the water glass should be, the difference between a sweater and a Cardigan seems to make little difference. One of these days I hope to take that Steam Locomotive operations course in Perris California. How lucky you are to get a cab ride in a great little locomotive.
A cab ride? It was more than that! I was learning to drive the thing! My hand can be seen on the regulator/throttle. On the other hand, I'm about to start work on the Kent & East Sussex Railway as an engine cleaner so that job partly involves taking cab rides. As you could imagine, this is beneficial as I'd be watching the fireman do his work in readiness for the next stage in terms of hierarchy. Like it was in BR (British Railways) days, there would be a hierarchy and here it is: Every engine man starts as a cleaner before progressing onto the other ranks and they are as follows: passed cleaner, trainee fireman, fireman, passed fireman, driver.
Wonderful! It seems that you're off on a journey that will lead to many great discoveries along the way. Over here on the West Coast of the US, I've been to several museums that start youngsters out pushing a broom and keeping things neat and tidy. Good luck in this endeavor, and I look forward to the images you'll be posting along the way. Clear tracks ahead.
