A lone semaphore signal remains in Urbana, Illinois, north of the U of I campus on Norfolk Southern's former New York Central Peoria & Eastern. This line once provided the NYC with a direct route from the East to Peoria, which was once a major rail hub. Now though, the P&E is broken up into discontinuous segments in towns such as Champaign-Urbana, where just a couple trains a day--if that--use this line. The semaphore is an intermediate for the crossing of CN / IC not far west.
