So, I've been having a great discussion about the 'real' Clopin from the Hunchback of Notre Dame book/play with
and I love that he too recognizes that Clopin is, in truth, a REALLY scary character.
I won't give the book away, so you who are interested should read it yourself! BUT, lets just say that once again, Disney 'lightened the mood' on a very dark and sinister story. I personally think they did a very good job, however, touching on rather taboo topics like: deformity, societal cruelty, religion, corruption, etc. And I think HoND is one of Disney's most under rated movies. If you're older now, go watch it again and see all the underlying darkness you missed when you were a kid! The movie is great fun, but INTENSE. Oo;;
SO! Back to Clopin... He's actually not the most cheerful and fun person... Disney may have 'lightened' him, but, they DID let his true colors show through a few times in expressions ( like the picture I'm using as my ID now ), his mannerisms, and some of his actions. (( I mean c'mon... he lives in the Paris catacombs and tried to HANG Quasimodo and Pheebus just for being down there! He's a murdering gypsy people... don't forget that when you see him singing and dancing! ))
So, in honor of the true King of Gypsys who proves that bright colors and a smile are very often just a mask we wear, I proudly display my NEW Clopin ID ^^
TLDR: Clopin is a scary, deadly mofo....

Another thing that makes the Disney version of Clopin so unsettling (in a fun way) is his rapport with kids. In the reprise of "The Bells of Notre Dame," watch the easy, breezy way he just scoops up the little girl in his arms and amuses her with the Frollo puppet. In those days, Gypsies were reputed to be child snatchers, or even child eaters--this reputation is an important plot point in the novel. So where are these kids' parents when their kids are hanging around this strange, somewhat menacing Gypsy man?
OK, I need to shut the heck up about Clopin and give some love to your actual artwork...as soon as I finish my homework...
