Theres nothing wrong with self teaching, it's what I've done for years. I watch a lot of videos on the basics of the style, but I add my own little flair to it that fits my body. After all if you think about it, kendo was originally someones invention to begin with, so theres nothing wrong with coming up with your own technique.
