Israi, the spoiled reptilian princess of the mighty, decandant Viis empire and her slave/pet, Ampris the golden Aaroun.
Fan art for Deb Chester's "Alien Chronicles" trilogy. As much as I usually like Terryl Whitlach's artowrk, her portraits of the characters didn't look anything like how I'd pictured them, so I thought I'd do my own version.
This is the sketch I did before starting the painting. I dropped a little flat color in so the figures are easier to pick out. The background is rough, because I won't do the nice, neat geometrical architecture until the last minute. I HATE drawing straight lines. I tried to put a little symbolism into it - the curtain on the right is supposed to look like it's just been swept away to reveal Israi, who can only gloat as she focuses on her ceremonial staff, but it's also supposed to mean it's curtains for the Viis. Ampris, who will become the leader of the rebellion, looks straight out at us and is parallelled by the pillar (she supports the movement). Pretentious, no?

I love this book. I imagined the viis to still have more humany faces (but not like a deformed frog like in the book illustration), but your version also makes sense. And is nice of course. Unfortunately, the tiny pic of Ampris on the back of the first book "ruined" my image of her from the start, but her body here looks like how I imagine. Anthropomorphic feline, no tail, solid build. Loved to see this colored
I always pictured them with long faces, I've actually shortened it up (based her on a Boyd's Forest Dragon). I don't think the books said anywhere that the Viis had flat faces, which is why the official Israi pic surprised me.
Man, those are great books. I was reading the third on the bus today and damned if the ending didn't make me sniffly. She seriously needs to write sequels, I want to see what happens with those little bastards Foloth and Nashmarl.
