Banjo-Kazooie was pretty much the last traditional 3D platformer I ever played as a kid. I don't really know how well it stacks up against games like Jak and Daxter or Ratchet and Clank. What really makes the game special to me though was the music. It's incredibly varied. For instance: Gruntilda's Lair, the main "hub" area, has a quietly sinister yet somehow charming theme consisting of bass, horns, xylophones and chimes. But go near any of the level portals and it smoothly transitions into a different flavor; same theme but with different instruments and a different feel.
The levels themselves are the same way. They each have at LEAST two different themes, a normal song and a vibraphone version for when you're underwater. Treasure Trove Cove starts out with steel drums but changes to what sounds like an accordion when you near Captain Blubber's wrecked ship. Go inside the sandcastle or Snipper's shell and you'll be treated to a slower version of the theme. And then there's Click Clock Wood which, looking at the list of .miniusf files I've got here, total 29 variations on a theme, not including Gruntilda's song from the hub.
And they're so full of LIFE. Ambient sound effects. Birds chirping, bees buzzing, ocean surf, blowing winds ... a friend mentioned that I should check out the soundtrack to Nuts and Bolts, considering that they give a live orchestral treatment to a lot of the original songs. They're NICE, but they almost feel lifeless in comparison with JUST instruments.
Anyway. I think I geeked out there.
