This illustration is for Dune of his character, Ghost. His dreamkeeper’s power is the ability to animate dolls and inanimate objects with life- And in this circumstance, it provides the perfect means to keep his newfound companion Wisp in good company.
I’m fairly pleased with how this illustration came out, mainly because it was at a high risk of plunging into one of my weaknesses as an artist. I love detailed backdrops, but this one was eating the viewer’s eye, and destroying the composition. All the busy shadows and objects and curliques will clutter up the value contrast to the degree that there’s no overall focus. In ‘Where’s Waldo’ type works that may be the goal, but not in this one.
I fixed the problem by going hell-for-leather on the atmospheric perspective. More mist from the waterfalls, and a nuclear-apocalypse evidently happening on the day-moon, throwing huge curtains of light behind the main characters to help bring out their silhouettes more.
That’s generally my artistic fix whenever I’m in trouble on something, nuclear apocalypse.

I've seen custom brushes before, and they can do some kickass stuff... I should probably learn how to do that at some point, but what I've been using instead are outside files which are photographs of sand, grit, our bathroom rug... And just pulling them in to photoshop and messing with the colors and opacity and such. It's perhaps a roundabout way to do it, but rather fun.
As I've noted in the comments here, the artist over the course of the pictures, has done an interesting job of making Ghost a softer character. I really should upload the original sketch some time. But as a snapshot in time, I don't see wisp as all that evil in this picture either. And everyone has their moments.
It is a thing of beauty. I have to admit I love the expressions on their faces. Ghost looks like he's a little worried what she will think. I've gotta admit Ghost has become a lot softer than that original picture you did over the last few drawings, but I like the way he has turned out.
is there more about this, that the commissioner has, and are willing to share?
other art, stories, etc, with these characters and story line?
I'M CAPTIVATED, by the idea of the dolls, and the one's ability to animate them with life, .. I wanna see hear experience MORE OF THIS WORLD..
