"I'd mentioned some time back that I was making a ring for my Mum-in-law as a Christmas present, making the entire thing from scratch. >^___^< She loved it, by the way...
She has a thing for frogs- loves them and has a growing collection of some really lovely pieces, too. Me, I like dragons and rubber ducks, so we've been slowly feeding each other's yen for silly.
One of the things that this lady completely has me floored on is she squirrels away all kinds of materials from various sources and gives it to me somewhere down the line. In one of those big batches of treasure (and they are big, like bags and boxes o'great stuff) I got 18 feet of 14K gold-filled wire.. So, as a kind of thank you and a really neat holiday gift, I did this little frog. I got raw chunks of turquoise stone, sorted out one that looked the right general shape and carved it with my Dremel (putting a round diamond burr out of commission in the process- turquoise is pretty hard), drilled it through the centre front to back, and then looped wire through to make the ring...
I wanted to make this as professional-looking as I could seeing as I don't have the skills to make molds yet... I really like how it turned out, too- looks gorgeous with the gold. YUM.
I have more pieces of turquoise from the same mine that I'm gonna carve soon- one piece I'm keeping, though. It's going to be a dragon.
Sorry about the weird flashes on the metal- the lighting in our bedroom sucks ass- even WITH all the lamps in the place on and the flash from the camera, I could NOT get a decent picture.
