Phase 2 Constitution Class Heavy Cruiser
The Constitution Class Heavy Cruiser is a design by Matt Jefferies. The "Phase II" variant is the interum design, between TOS, and TMP. Orignially intended for the comeback of the series. It was redesigned again, as it was desided to go with a movie.

I wish I could still find it, but there were a LOT of elements from Phase 2 that were eventually carried over into TNG. Decker and Ilia would be Riker and Troi, the full Vulcan trying to figure out humans would become Data and I know there was something about the Phase 2 Enterprise becoming the Enterprise C, if only seen briefly

Trivia: this new Enterprise and her sisters were to have a saucer who's detatchment and planetfall was part of her standard operational profile. Planetside starbases had a huge landing field of several square kilometers where the saucers of multiple starships could land and disembark at once.
