It has been a very very long time since I attempted to look at reference work and emulate a different art style, but a friend challenged me to do so as I might learn new things and have another "jump" in my style.
So, I tried to emulate a Disney Style. And, I used Disney characters that I don't see much art of. I played with Zira from Lion King 2, looking at some direct reference stuff, for the top right there... I had not done reference work in a long, long time, where i try to imitate exactly what I see on the screen. This is like tracing, except you leave the lines in your head, not under the paper, and try to imaging the image still there as you draw it. It came out pretty good! Then I played a bit with expressions in such a way that the reference was less necessary on the bottom right there, and then I broke away from the reference altogether on the left, and sketched some on my own since I felt comfortable with the lines. I redrew Zira, and then I drew Miss Bianca from the Rescuers essentially from memory, though I looked at a reference because I could not remember how her lovely hat looked.
All in all, I had a lot of fun with this, and I learned a bit too. I learned that Miss Bianca's hands are crazy easy to draw and I don't know why. Maybe I will try to play with different style a little more.
Zira and Bianca are © Disney. This art is shoddily drawn by Me. :3
