What you actually need to do is trademark, but the character(s) would have to be fully established first. In the meanwhile, copyright would protect the image you produce.
FA says that anything published here has a copyright. I'm not so sure about that. I sent away for a copyright package when I did Xanadu. Just Google "copyright, government, document" and you'll probably find it.
Another thing you can do is a book of drawings, then publish that book either as an ebook or print on demand and get your copyright through them. (Publishing an ebook is free; print on demand has a price-tag. BUT if you do an ebook, you're going to want the "read only" option that prevents people from making copies of your file. It complicates sales, but it's worth the fuss.)
You can do this through https://www.lulu.com .

oh, thanks!! that helps a lot. my aunt (who is an artists) says that things are technically copyrighted to you as soon as you put them into being, but i know a lot of people don't care about that, and it doesn't always always matter. so i'll try to look into Lulu and trademarks, copyright, etc. AND to think of specific characters for these little guys
The internet makes image-theft incredibly easy. There have been cases here where images have been taken and reproduced on overseas sights in pay-for-download formats. Just reproducing an image on a blog is not a violation of a copyright --yet. Asking to be paid for it is. You cannot stop all of it, but it doesn't hurt to cover your bases.
