Petco. I bought two crabs, one died, I replaced it and bought another, both of them died. Then I bought another when I got back from a trip and it died. They were in an enclosure in the store that was way, way too dry and the employee was all, "They've been here a long time" so that wasn't a good sign but I thought I'd try anyway. They were literally suffocated to death. Putting them in a better environment doesn't make things better because they are very sensitive to humidity changes and they were already highly stressed. They survived long enough that I got sorta attached, though.
I've had the best success with crabs I got at a mall kiosk, probably because they get sold a lot quicker before they get really sick. Kee and Osk are my crabs of four years, the first crabs I ever purchased.
I have heard horror stories about pet stores, like on the Crab Street Journal someone posted about encountering a pet store manager who put his stock of land hermit crabs in a saltwater aquarium.
No less than two pet store employees have commented that they smell. I reply that they're not supposed to smell. They are smell-less pets.
