A timely story! The Minutemen are preparing to face the surprising expansion Winnipeg Voyageurs in the final game the two teams will play this season.
Coach Morgan Roosevelt (raccoon) stared at a clipboard and then up at his players as they ran through their drills. Each of the players were all dressed in the team’s practice uniforms; the navy shirts featured a white bordered “WILLIAMSBURG MINUTEMEN BASKETBALL” in red, coupled with white shorts emblazoned with the team’s home secondary WM-star logo. The older raccoon smirked as he saw Eleanor Rigby (Deer, PG) and rookie Tina McCall (Fennec Fox, PG) sitting cross-legged on one of the benches. Eleanor then opened her eyes, calmly picked up a basketball and jogged up to her coach.
“Everything was groovy with the world, Coach Roosevelt. You want me to work with cutting and my jump shot today,” she said matter-of-factly, with a little smile. Morgan could only smile back.
“You can read me like a book. So get to it.”
“Right on, Coach,” she said, taking a basketball and jogging over to Marron Gwosdz (Arctic Vixen, SG), who was waiting to assist her. Kelsey Hampshire (Red Fox, assistant coach) shook his head.
“Eleanor’s a very perceptive player, isn’t she?” he said. Roosevelt nodded.
“That's why I’m glad she’s still here. It’s incredible how much of a great teammate she is,” he said. He glanced black over at Tina who seemed to be thinking pretty hard. The coach couldn’t help but think of her aunt Karen, and sometimes had to avoid thinking of Tina as the little kit who ran around Patriot Stadium’s corridors and pored over the media guides in the coach’s office during downtime.
She then sighed a little and opened her eyes and jogged over to Coach Roosevelt.
“Sorry for taking so long, Coach, I was just trying to do what Eleanor suggested with visualization exercises,” she said. Morgan nodded.
“Really? Is it working for you?”
“Yeah, it is,” she said with a smile. “I’m seeing past actions a lot more clearly now,.”
“Great to know. Now get to work. We’ve got to prepare for Winnipeg tonight,”
“Yes, sir, Coach!” she said brightly, then jogging over to assist Wiley Twaddle (Woodchuck, SG) and Otto Okkonen (Dragon, SF). Tina worked to pass around the Otto the defender while Wiley shot threes off the pass. Any misses were gobbled up by the tall dragon.
On the other side of the court, Nick Nwabudike (Elephant, C) was asked to work with rebounding techniques with Eric Logan (Bull Elephant, C). When Eric was told this by the assistant coach, the younger elephant got a bit of a scowl on his face, but he went and practiced with Nick anyway.
Nick suggested that Eric get a bit of extension on his trunk as he stretched it out to grab a rebound. Eric nodded and stood back. Lenny HIcks (Coydog, PF) took a break from his jump shooting to bounce a ball off the backboard.
Nwabudike fully extended his trunk and curled the tip around the basketball before he came down. and hit the wood floor with a thud.
“Are you through?” Eric asked.
Nick nodded. “Of course, Eric,” he said in his heavy Nigerian accent. It disheartened the veteran a little that Logan didn’t seem to want to listen to him. Nick did notice that Eric was watching, and when he worked in his rebounding practice, he did try trunk extensions. Maybe he was listening a little after all.
The two had an odd work relationship. An outsider might think because they were elephants they would get along. But that wasn’t true. Nick tried to extend a trunk of friendship to Eric, like he did with others, but Eric kept his distance. Logan occasionally talked with Nwabudike, but only if he had to. Otherwise, he never ate with him or sat near him on the bus.
It was almost like Eric was avoiding Nick.
Still, the two readily accepted the terms of working together. After all, they had the same goals: helping the Minutemen to victory.

After the drills were finished, Roosevelt gathered the players in a small circle at the center of the court.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” he started “we are at the halfway point of the year.
“We’ve got something truly special here Keep moving forward, keep achieving, keep making your family, friends and fans proud. Now, all in and on three...”
The group put their paws in the middle of the circle.
“One... two... three...”
“MINUTEMEN!”
“Now let’s relax and then be here for tonight’s game!”
“Yes sir!”

Vera La Tiérra (Red Vixen, PG, WIL) pulled on her red long-sleeve shirt after putting on her jeans and heavy black shoes for cold, sometimes snowy days. She looked up at the other girls, whom were finishing getting dressed as well. Vera flicked her brown tresses aside.
“Muchachas... I have something I wan’ to tell you, but jou absolutely CAN’T tell anyone else outside of here...” she said with a slight hint of insecurity.
“Sure, Vera, what is it?” Marron asked, just pulling on her green sweater.
“Well... Leonard and I are... going out,” she said.
“Aww, that’s great!” Blaze replied with happiness evident in her voice.
“You are?! Oh, that’s so cute!” Tina squealed with delight.
“That’s groovy, Vera,” Eleanor replied.
“Jou’all promise not to tell?” she asked.
“Of course.”
“Uh-huh.”
“It floats in the ether never to be found again.”
“Muchas gracias, amigas,” she said, smiling and fully gathering her stuff to leave.

Lenny Hicks held his oPhone to his ear as he exited the practice facility, having just called his wife Sandra.
“Have a nice day, cowgirl?” Hicks asked his wife as he walked to his car.
“I sure did! Are you guys going to win tonight?” the coyote asked.
“Well, we’ll try. We have to defend the undefeated home record!”
“That’s true! Looking forward to watching you play.”
“Looking forward to you watching. I’ll Skype with you later tonight.”
“Sure thing. Have a good game, cowboy,” she cooed, coupled with a kiss.
“Thanks, cowgirl....” he said, "kissing" back. The coydog then spied Leonard Mack (Fox, PF) and Vera coming out of the practice gym coming home.
Lenny noticed the two were holding paws gingerly. He knew that grip.
“Heh, it’s about time...” he chuckled.
“What’s that, Lenny?”
“Oh, nothing, Sandra. I love you.”
“Love you too, Lenny.”
Hicks hung up his phone, definitely keeping that little idea to himself. It was only a guess; no sense in bringing it up. But, hardened coydog as he was, he was a little softie towards the love of his life.
And he recognized love when he saw it.

Well, Tina's a nice girl. She likes gossip, but she knows how to keep a secret.
Marron is an in unusal situation, being married to the general manager and all, so she HAS to keep a secret so as to not betray the trust of her teammates.
And Eleanor easily forgets things, as she just explained. :)
