Why must it be mutually exclusive? Why not go for something like what's discussed in "Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality," i.e. using a logical, scientific approach to magic? Sure, magic may have laws of its own that are mutually exclusive to scientific laws, but taking a logic-based approach to them could indeed prove enlightening. And it wouldn't be without historical precedent either; Newton dabbled in alchemy, as did Sir Francis Bacon.
Don't you Know, that Science and Sorcery should never mix. Otherwise it causes minus waves. That cause all the regions of demons to go mad from there dark combination. Tis the taboo of Man's science to ever come in contact with Mystical creatures sorcery. ..Otherwise its SAIYUKI all over again <Journey to the west-Chinese legend>
Science and magic can never be separated. Science isn't a means...it's a method of exploration and logic, a way to objectively investigate the world. Magic is closer to engineering...a means of application. Magic can act upon the world.
A mage with a science background is insanely powerful because they can not only manipulate reality but they know how it all works.
Science gives you the knowhow on the nuts and bolts of the universe. Magic is what lets you do something with it.
