So long to reply here. I'm deep in the rewriting process for the whole Neighbors thing with an eye toward a 50,000 word total and an April 30th deadline. Which means I'm creating subplots and weaving them through the stuff I've already posted and generally changing everything around. Adventure!

I would say:
That numbers for dogs are very concrete. If there are five balls on the ground or fifteen or fifty, a dog could count them all and tell you. But if you took the balls away and asked the dog to count, the dog would just blink at you and ask, "Count what?"
