lauragarabedian, who is currently open for commissions!, was conscribed by yours truly to create something epic for this year's SolstiCon "party favor". See, every year I hold this Solstice Party thing, 'cause White Elephant exchanges are fun, my birthday is the Winter Solstice, and it's a date of astronomical significance. A couple of years ago I had some cute plastic ornaments made with Tugrik's help, and they went over fairly well. That's where the monacre "SolstiCon" came about (it was laser printed on the ornaments). This year, I thought I'd change it up a bit with custom coffee mugs. I knew Laura was one who had such merch in the past, so aside from just being awesome with art and with a unique and accessible style that all my guests could appreciate, she was the natural choice for me to work with. We had recently seen The Lion King traveling musical together in Denver, and Laura fell so incredibly in love with the design of the costumes and masks and such that we just had to incorporate it into this design while still giving it some kind of "solstice" theme. I think this piece worked out perfectly, and looks positively ROCKIN' on a coffee mug, btw. ^_^

I positively LOVE the markings she put on him, and the mask, and his size, and him being all helpful and stuff putting a nice bright shiny start on top of Pride Rock. I bet Simba and Nala there are just all, "Gosh, that's very helpful, but .. umm, where exactly does HE fit in the Circle of Life?"

Man, those markings ... most artists would complain about such complexity, but it's so friggin' beautiful and free!! I'm sure Laura had fun making it, but dang, I couldn't imagine asking anyone (even Laura!) to try to replicate that in any future pieces. So this will be a one-of-a-kind in my collection of originals. I'm seriously happy with this on many levels!
