More of the achievements created for the 2006 Further Confusion program book. There’s a lot of yellow, which represents gold—called or in blazonry, the specialized jargon of heraldry. Certainly it seems to be a good deal more popular than the other metal acknowledged in English heraldry, silver or argent.
The odd black marks on white in the Ferrers achievement is ermine. It’s supposed to represent a coat or other garment made from ermine fur; the black spots are an attempt to render the tails, still attached to the pelts used in the garment.
In like fashion, each of the charges, or distinctive individual graphic elements, has its own name, as does each portion of the achivement’s surface. No, I’m not even going to try to name them all, let alone rattle off a complete blazon, for any of the achievements. I’ll leave that as an exercise for the class—I’m dead sure there are folks out there who could do it in their sleep.
