If she's mad because its a "poor portrayal of handicapped people" she's looking at it in the glass half empty type way. I've seen a bit of Derpy's portrayal in the show and she's happy. She has fun. She's A PEGASUS, making her SUPER SPECIAL AWESOME! She works with the other ponies, and she does a great job being herself and loving others as much as they love her.

If anything she's "normal" and not treated any different. Which is good. And a good portrayal in my opinion.

She's just a cute (and a little klutzy) pony. I can understand if they had Rainbow Dash laugh or mock Derpy for anything, then yes there would be something to complain about. But Rainbow Dash treated her like any other pony, and isn't that what you would want?

As good as intentions as it may be, babying someone with a mental handicap can be just as insulting as making fun of them. They're people too, they deserve to be treated just like anyone else.

You should see the flipouts that happen when the show's canon does not fit their "fanon". Some of the fans are like spoiled children and think that they know better of the show than the creators. It's like Killer 7's fandom when Suda 51 released a book on what the game was really about. Theory sites destroyed and people throwing a tantrum instead of simply "Oh, so that's what it is."

I was under the impression that in this case, the canon IS fitting the fanon. Which makes it even more confusing. ^_^;;

The main problem here was, when Tabitha St. Germain (the voice actress) went in to do the voice, she didn't know Derpy was supposed to be female, so she did a 'boy' voice. Coming out of a mare's mouth, the voice arguably made her sound "retarded".

It was fun to see danger incarnate ruin Rainbow Dash's day. And really, Derpy isn't even that retarded...I know countless people who are JUST LIKE THAT and they aren't "retarded."
