Unlike half the guards of Skyrim, Graaver was a guard before becoming an adventurer. Also, he's far more likely to be the one putting arrows into the knees of others. Graaver's old job was security at the local mages' tower and academy. The pay was good enough, but it was boring, not to mention degrading. The mages wanted Graaver to look as intimidating as possible, and so had him dress all in black and adorn himself with (imitation) skulls. fed up with the treatment, the minotaur added archery to his arsenal and switched to full-time ranger-ing.
