I spent so much time messing around with the details of this one, I just had to show a close-up. This is a totally wrong way to do fur that I experimented with. I used a 3D texture, overlayed it on my already painted figure, then pushed the texture around with the smudge tool in Photoshop so that the direction of the fur would conform to the shape of the wolf's body, then finally painted another layer of fur over the whole thing to make it more natural.
