One of my older photos I took the day we took the ferry to the Nagasaki Prefecture. This is in the town of Shimabara, right at the base of the Mt. Unzen volcano. During a five-year period between 1990 and 1995 there was a series of catastrophic eruptions that devastated the town. This is part of a small patch of land, preserved after an eruption in 1991 buried a small neighborhood in volcanic debris.
There was a very eerie tension in the air as I looked around at all of the abandoned houses. Some of them had only the roof tiles sticking out above ground.
