Of Spice and Ferrets
Sly was stunned. Since their last encounter in Paris, Sachet had changed dramatically. Her usually perfect tail was scruffy and ragged, beating the odd rhythm on the floor of the cell. Her hair, which she took extreme care of, was frizzy and unkempt. He couldn't see her eyes, but felt a strong pang of guilt- somehow he felt it was his fault she ended up here.
"Cuz... I can.. I can, I can, I can, sunshine, candy pops and rocks and rolling along..." Sachet's feeble voice came floating over to him, nonrhythmic and out of tune. She was waving her hands over her head, conducting an imaginary orchestra.
"Sly? What's the matter?" Bentley said concerned when he heard Sly's short intake of breath.
"Bentley- You'll- I-" For the first time, Sly felt at a loss for words.
"Sly?"
"Bentley, I just found Sachet," Sly whispered.
"RIP HIM TO PIECES!" Sachet suddenly screeched, sending Sly scuttling backwards. Her face was contorted with rage at an unseen enemy. "Tear him apart! Mm! Yes, sunshine.. clouds and blue birds and purple skies, yummy gummy yum, yum, yum..." and just as suddenly as it had started it subsided.
"We gotta get her out of there!" Sly said sharply. "I don't know what the Contessa has done to her, but she's lost her mind completely!"
"Sly, we can't, we have to get Murray out first!"
"This can't wait, Bentley, look at her!" Sly put his Binocucom on Live Feed and pointed it at Sachet. She was giggling at a joke she made to herself, and started humming.
"She is in bad shape-"
"Bad is the understatement of the century. I'm sorry Bentley, but I at least have to talk to her. Let her know I'm here." Sly didn't feel any witty remarks bubble to the surface. Not even a quick remark. He simply crawled up to the vent and called for her.
"Sachet! Hey, Sachet!" He got no response. She merely looked up and, for the first time, Sly got a look at her eyes. The pupils were small, tiny black pinpricks in the sea of green, and they didn't focus on anything. They merely drifted over the wall, unseeing. Sly tried again, louder.
"Sachet! Hey! It's me, Sly!" The name grabbed her attention, and at once the dull look was gone. She was fully alert and locked her eyes on his.
But she didn't say anything.
