Ahaa, next trip into Winnipeg I'm gonna be running around to pick stuff up and I gotta get into Micheal's anyway so is all good but thanks for the offer!
And colouring is harrrrrd and I always end up doing something alittle different every time but for the most part I use Paint Tool Sai cause it has such deliciously smooth lines and brushes that can smooth colour automatically but anywhooooo my entire process give or take.
Sketchsketchsketch. I can't do anything with out a sketch and lately I tend to start out with a bigger brush and messily sketch out the form in a pretty light colour and after use a smaller and slightly darker colour and define the sketch that'll be my guide line when I line it.
Then I line it lol.
After the lineart is finished I make a layer for a solid background colour which I usually fill in with a neutral colour to make it a little easier on my eyes and on a layer above the solid background that I normally name "flats" or "solidColours" I fill in the character with a single colour and lock the layers' opacity. I'm then free to add in all the colours and markings and yes I do it all on one layer.
After I have the character's colours placed I duplicate the layer and name it "shades" and making sure it's opacity is locked I then go over this layer with white. I then change the layer to a multiply layer and throw it's opacity anywhere from 40%-50% and start adding the shading using a dark blue or sometimes purple but use what ever colour you like : D. Where ever I do the soft shading I'm actually just using a hard Pencil brush with the opacity of the brush turned down alternating between the shade colour and white untill I've got it smooth. You can actually just use watercolour or a brush tool for a faster result but I just.. it looks funny to me xD. like almost way to smooth.
Eyes tend to get their own layer as do anything shiny.
I could make a visual tutorial for you after I'm done the other trade if you'd like : o
