Just something I did for the benefit of a few rescue groups out here that I donate too, and that hold information sessions while fighting the blight that is BSL. (And it killed a few dreary hours today, which was a bonus.)
Dogs were based off random photos found online. Redrawn and simplified to keep the chart looking clean and uncluttered. I think it turned out pretty cool.
I would have liked to have included the Cane Corso, Valley Bulldog, and Olde English Bulldogge too, but didn't have space...
I omitted the French and English Bulldog, because their impossible to mistake for a "pit bull type" dog.
And I also didn't include some of the new "designer breeds" that have become popular like the Shorty Bull, Froston, Bonsai Bulldog, Miniature Bulldog, Boston Bulldogge, Bug, and Banter Bulldogge...

And the one I used as reference wasn't as extreme as most!
I hate how they come in weight classes like they're f'ing MMA fighters. (The Heavy-weight category of American Bully are just bloody atrocious looking IMO). And since they started with APBT x Am Staffs, they just keep registering them with the UKC as APBT's, even though they're so out of the breed standard they might as well call them Mastiffs. (Most have hung papers anyway, which I found out is actually really easy to do, especially now with the internet.) :/

Oh, I know. They are sweet dogs, but so twisted away from the APBT its terrible.
The APBT is a lean and athletic dog, like a professional runner...The AmBully is...well...a whale.
When a dog can't even breed without assistance, you're doing something terribly wrong to its anatomy. :|
I actually wish they were a breed of their own...then they would at least have some kind of standard and could be registered as an AmBully, not falsely as an APBT... *sigh*

I think they're working on that. They've started up several of their own "Kennel Clubs" so they can get them registered, but those Clubs aren't recognized like the AKC/UCK/CKC is.
Mind you, it takes decades to get a new breed recognized. And honestly, the American Bully breeders need to be stricter on their standard, and set proper weight and height limits, because right now their standard is so open-ended, vauge, and poorly written... non of the dogs look the same. (They describe them by size like you describe clothing! Small-XL!) :/

Yeah.
They should either stop breeding them so extreme, or set a reasonable standard for EVERYONE to follow.
I know there's an AmBully breeder near me (Not surprised)...I've looked at their site...their dogs are so messed up.
Breeding specifically for size will always lead to problems.
The AmBully is to the APBT what the modern English Bulldog is to the original bulldogs... :\

Yep. Exactly.
There are a small number of breeders out there that take the whole health-testing thing seriously, but they're far outnumbered by the jerks who don't care about anything other than how wide the dog's chest is or how big it's head is, no matter what damage it does to the dogs or how much they'll suffer from medical problems because of it... all they're thinking of is the $$ they can charge per puppy. :/

I think someone posted some videos of AmBully 'breeders' getting their dogs to mate....mostly asking if we considered it rape.
Because the female was tied into a device I've heard called a 'rape-rack'...
All for money. They talk about these dogs like they talk about their cars...And don't get me started on that 'bully max' bs that makes them bigger.... :|

Seriously? They used the term "rape rack"??
The term is "BREEDING STAND", and it was originally used to help consummate the act when the female is difficult (some females will sit and refuse to be mated). Or if she might injure the male dog by fighting. It was used ob many different breeds, not just bullies. Nowadays, I think most breeders use artificial insemination rather than risk their studs...
I swear, once the media got a hold if just the IDEA of that device existing, everyone went nuts... I even saw it referred to on more than once CSI show. And the same people who latched onto the idea of vicious guard dog pit bulls, latched onto the notion that something like that was also necessary. Personally I think it was just their twisted subconscious coming to the forefront.... who else would feel the need to advertise the use of one? I mean, really? :/
Oh yeah, I've heard about that "bully max" crap too.... *shakes head*

I also find it incredibly classy that bully breeders will advertise a new breeding by posing images of the two dogs still tied.... *sarcasm*
AmBullies are just penis extensions....Deformed and unhealthy penis extensions....because they look tough...Sorry, a true fighting dog would rip an AmBully apart. Only thing it has going for it is weight...
and, really, I'd have more respect for a guy who owns a very strong willed APBT and can control it, than a guy who owns an AmBully...

I know that some "tie" photos are used as proof of a breeding to people who have put down payments on puppies from specific a breeding/pairing (I've seen dutch shepherd breeders, American bulldog breeders, Lab breeders, etc do the same).
American bullies are just English bulldogs with a blue coat and mastiff head, basically. All "look" and little "substance". Like most breeds nowadays that don't have "jobs". To me, they're in the same category as those "doodle" things people keep creating by crossing poodles with everything under the sun, and Puggles/Bugs/Jugs/etc...etc...etc. Bred for looks and to fit a stereotype, not bred to be anything functional.

But the bully breeders seem to make more of a big deal about it... :|
And I already said that the AmBully is doing to the APBT/AmStaff what breeders have long since done to the english bulldog. Making it incapable of doing the job it was originally created to do. Since the AmBully is mostly from pit bulls and AmStaffs, who are mostly capable of doing the job they were originally created to do (even if its immoral and illegal, they can still physically do it, and do many other jobs with the right training)...the AmBully isn't even capable of guarding because of how slow it is...
And while most of the "hybrid" breeds are just backyard breeders taking advantage of a fad...the Labradoodle was bred for a purpose...A service dog that triggers less allergy sufferers...And the man who started the Labradoodle regrets it... :c

I had a bull terrier growing up. He was the best dog. His name was Petey but I called him PeeDee since... uh... I guess I couldn't talk yet.
People are idiots regarding dog breeds. I once had to tell my landlord SIX TIMES that my dog wasn't a GSD mix.

Dig's a "Carolina Dog". Basically a feral mismatch until they all kind of come out looking dingo-ish (red/yellow and white, curling tail, upright ears, etc.) Dig isn't quite typical and has some hound of some kind in him, but that's essentially what he is. http://pics.livejournal.com/allykat/pic/001317x3
The landlord wanted to know because GSDs were "outlawed" in that complex along with dobermans, rotties, and pitties. It was only one of the many ways in which this particular place was douchefest.

Funny that three out of those four breeds are GERMAN. WTF. Tell the guy your Canadian friend thinks he's an hypocritical a-hole...
Is Dig registered? (Carolina Dogs are registered now with the UKC and several other Kennel Clubs as a purebred dog) That'd shut the landlord up.
How the hell can he see GSD in that dog though? Seriously. It totally looks Border Collie x Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever x pointer or hound. (I like to call 'em Heinz 57's... because there's a little of EVERYTHING in 'em. lol). :/

Naw. I have kind of a beef with them being registered. They wouldn't have happened if generations of Carolina hicks hadn't let their dogs run loose breeding indiscriminately. It's like the anti-purebred. YAY WE CAN'T SPAY AND NEUTER OUR ANIMALS WE MADE DINGOS GO US.
I am almost positive that Dig is the result of two dogs who lived in my neighborhood. The dog was a kind of... maybe jack russel ish... corgi maybe? Who knows but squat and short. The bitched looked like a chow who had had 60,000 litters. And together they (probably) made DIGORY. Dog magic.
I did get my revenge on that landlord calling every week about my heroine using neighbors. Nobody in Germany says anything about him except that he's cute. :P

Technically though, that's how all pure breds are created. A select gene pool procreates, and if it's small enough a standard in form is created, whether by deliberate human intervention (like most modern and some ancient purebreds), or natural selection (Dingos, etc). In dogs it doesn't take that many generations either, since their genome is pretty unique. :P
Glad to hear you got back at the Landlord somehow though, for all the harassment. People like that suck.

I've not heard of the "johnson" american bulldog before, and thanks to this identified one of the dogs that comes to where I work as one! We usually see the more athletic/streamlined looking American Bulldogs around here so I was really baffled by his being called an American Bulldog and figured he must be a mix. Thanks for enlightening me!
My own dog is a pit bull. I love her to bits. I think the title of the breed should be an honor, and hope one day people will come to their senses.

I love Johnson-types. They're big and thick just like Mastiffs (well, technically bulldogs are distantly related to mastiffs so...). Not too crazy about the drool factor though! LOL
I prefer the Scott-type myself, with the athletic build and longer muzzle, less wrinkles and tighter lips, but they so often get mislabled as "pit bulls", it's disheartening because of the BSL here.
The Hybrid (I didn't include on the chart), is a mix of the Johnson and Scott types, thicker in build than the Scott but less "jowl-ey"/wrinkly than the Johnson. Most American Bulldogs out there now are actually of the Hybrid type.
My dog is a pit bull x. She's got her issues but I love her none the less. And I agree... I hope one day they come to their senses too, before it's too late.

Yeah, I am not sure I could live with a drooly dog. It's not their fault... but it's kinda icky. XD Guess I am too fussy to deal with that!
My pittie has issues too. I rescued her from the shelter I worked at many years ago. She was there for maybe 6 months and never got a single application, so when I left that job I took her with me. Needless to say, any dog who's been through that is going to have some long-standing issues. I've never met a person without issues though so I think dogs are allowed to have their faults. (Not that I don't try to help her through them of course)
BSL is evil. It scares me it seems to be spreading. :/

My dog is a shelter rescue too. She's got insecurities and fear issues. I try my best to keep her socialized and to keep her out of situations that spark her fears, but it's hard. Especially when you live where there's BSL (which I do).
Ignorance and fear are easily spread, it takes no effort to stay stupid and afraid. Wisdom and knowledge takes time to acquire, thus is slower to catch up with hysteria... thankfully many places that had BSL over the past twenty years, have started to remove it. Sadly, other places still haven't got the hint that it doesn't work... especially in America and Australia.

Boston Terriers are part of this list? They're itty-bitty cutie pies! :) My friend has one as a service dog. I think the way she put it is he helps her stay in the present. PTSD.. of some kind... I don't really understand it that well, but I do know Dragon is one of the sweetest most well-behaved dogs I've ever seen.
They're on the list because they're direct descendants of fighting dogs, and if APBT and Am'Staffs are on the list, so should be Bostons as they have bull and terrier blood in their genetic makeup too. French bulldogs are considered Bullies by some, and they've got some influence in the genetics of the Boston (how the nose went from long like a terrier to flat like a bulldog). So yes, Bostons can be considered bully. They're also square headed, short haired, and have been accused of even being "pit bulls" by people living where there is BSL.
This is awesome! I always knew that "pit bull" was a pretty broad term for many variations of the "breed" itself. This poster would have saved a lot of grief in explaining my friend's dog was NOT a pitbull, but in actuality an american bulldog...probably a Scott's. lol. Where exactly does -that- particular name come from? Is it short for Scottish? I always thought they were just straight up american bulldogs. :/
The terms come from the names of the main founding breeders, who standardized their respective "style" of American bulldog.
The bigger, mastiff-like "Bully" style American Bulldog was developed by John D. Johnson, thus the "Johnson" term when referring to that body type. The other, with a smaller more athletic build and less wrinkle was developed by Alan Scott, thus the "standard" body type being referred to as a Scott type American Bulldog. And then when you cross the two types, it's called a "hybrid", as it'll be somewhere in the middle when it comes to it's physical characteristics.
Most often it's the Scott or Standard type American Bulldog that's mistakenly identified as a large "pit bull".

Thanks for breaking it down for me. :) I remember this particular friend of mine insisting that her puppy was the standard in "American Bulldog" and being fairly agro about it. I never thought that there were two versions. X_X She definitely has a "Scott's." Pickles is a beautiful beefier version of Homeward Bound's 'Chance.' lol. Without the cross-country journey. :}
