Smaug was the first dragon that left an impression on my young pysche. Where trolls and goblins and spiders had all proven themslves fearsome inhabitants of the land of animated make believe,... Smaug distinguished himself as something far more terrible. He was more than 'the dragon at the end of the movie' he was Smaug. He was not some mindless beast,.. ,.. he was calm and calculated in his conversation with an invisible intruder. He was not /right/ in the conclusions he made,... but still demonstrated the point of his character.

The unbridled destruction of innocent bystanders for the bother of having his relative slumber amid riches disturbed.

Smaug doesn't put up with shit. Even if the glowy eyes may not work,.. Smaug will still demonstrate an ability to fuck you up.

Seeing him in the craft of your mind's eye pleasantly haunts me with echoes from a much much younger day.

Same here as far as first dragons go... He was just SO awe-inspiring ta me as what a real dragon must be like that I fell in love with him instantly...

as an artist I knew that eventually I jus' HAD ta draw him up the way that animation had portrayed him that made me fall in love with him those many years ago... m'glad that this stirred such recollections in you that it has in me :)

Extremely well stated! Part of me is really worried that they're not going to do Smaug properly in the upcoming movie. But they've got Benedict Cumberbatch doing the voice so that's a damned good start!
