As people likely recall, I've using an avatar which is a cropped version of a gift commission 
Addylad. It's awesome, I really like it, BUUUTTT I like variety, I've been using it for about half a year now, so I felt like the time for a change came, but I had no ideas. Then I saw Bahn and his avatar (it's the current one as of the date of this upload) and I gotta praise the creativity on it. I know Bahn is kind of just starting out with drawing (as far as I can tell at least, I approve either way, good progress), so he does commissions, and the avatar he uses is just a cropped version of the commissioned pic:

But he had a clever idea there! The big eyes, just seeing the nostrils... I really liked it, so I thought I could do something similar and thus I've made my own avatar. I of course asked Crimes, the original artist for permission, but she said that, because she sees that it was not traced (which it really wasn't ) and just inspired, it's ok! She even gave me a bit of an advice how to improve it, especially considering that this will be shrank to an icon size.
So that's basically it.

But I had to ! I really did! I don't go into people's houses, eat their food and go off without a thank you :p Or something.... can't come up with a good methaphore.
I guess I'm just too self-critical I keep seeing all the mistakes on it, how it could be better... But wow, you made one like that already? Where do you "real artists" get this pace?! But it looks nice :) Hope Bahn sees this too

Really? Looks fine from here. But I think I can guess the difference you're talking about.
I use PhotoShop CS4. I don't do anything I'd consider fancy:
Using the crop tool, I set the output dimensions to the size I'm wanting (the options bar that appears near the top of the window). In the case of FA approved icons, that would be 100px by 100px, leave the 3rd option blank.
I make the crop selection as big as I need to fit in whatever I want to show.
When accepted, PS will automatically reduce it to the requested size.
When it's to my liking, I use the "Save For Web & Devices" feature. Quality: 100, Blur: 0, Matte: none and only the "Optimized" box checked. Leave everything else as is but make sure you're saving it as a JPEG.
That's pretty much it.
