he's not the original. the original is in short story form :P
i'm a sherlock fan of the written form. i never really got into bazil's portrayal, never really enjoyed the hollywood remakes or portrayals, and generally hate what tv does to his character.
but moffatt seems to really grasp what sherlock is. he's just added some modernization. and really, people have been giggling that holmes and watson are a pair for aaaaaaaaaages

Deduction! Deduction! Whats your function?
Never really got into books and movies...Except for the movie were Watson and Holmes were kids just going into prep school. I still laugh at remembering that cupcake trying to force its way down Watson's throat.
So in light of this I'm a little clueless...I always thought of Holmes as being more asexual about relationships because he was always the intellectual person.

Young Sherlock Holmes! that's the stephen spielberg one. i watched that a lot cause it was on a bootleg tape immediately following Goonies.
holmes is def. asexual, their relationship isn't sexual at all. i know it's a hard concept for people to grasp but...that's just how it is. you don't have to be a sexual person in order to have a partner, y'know?

Hmmmmmm...Though maybe that's over simplifying it.
Any good relationship we're told of is not based on sex alone. So it stands to reason that sex is not the important part of a relationship. It's how you interact with a partner, how you talk, laugh, debate, hug maybe once and a while. So it stands to reason you can have a healthy relationship without sex if its the smallest thing on the list.

and for sherlock, who's a very atypical human being and overly analytical about everything, it's practically an impossibility. there's just so much more he'd rather do with his time. and watson is able to understand this, which by itself is kind of a feat of relationship...
I have known a few people who are genuinely asexual. The energy and drive that would normally go into sexual desires is redirected to one's creative passions. In Holmes' case, working on a case is like masturbating, and solving it is like release. Thing about it: having completed the act, one feels content and exhausted, at least for a short time. But soon enough, the need returns, and if it isn't answered, it lingers - and malingers.
I like the 21st Century Sherlock Holmes shown on Masterpiece Mystery.
Alistair Cook once said that Sherlock Holmes would be obsolete in contemporary settings because forensic technology does what he did better.
But this series proves the statement wrong. Holmes uses current technology better and more creatively than the police. Also, the side characters openly speculate about Sherlock being gay.
As to his eccentric behavior, a chief detective sniped something like:
"What do you expect from a sociopath?"
Holmes: "Act-chully, I'm a high-functioning psychopath"
Watson is a Gulf War veteran combat surgeon with PTSD.
Mrs Hudson is utterly unchanged from the Victorian setting. She barges in with food and worries about the general health of Holmes and Watson.
