A few years ago while in Medford Lakes, New Jersey there were hordes of these Gypsy moths everywhere. While at a stopping point I noticed these three on a nearby tree.
If you’re wondering what those brown fuzzy things are under their wings they’re egg masses.

It's interesting you mention that. I did some quick research and found a website (gypsymothalert.com) with photographs of various known egg masses in New Jersey. Many of them were in Medford Lakes and surrounding areas. The photos on the site are dated spring 2007, which I believe is around the time I took this photo. Kinda interesting.
They do look pretty, but I think they're considered a pest. I think it's because when the eggs hatch it releases a lot of caterpillars, and when you have several egg masses on each tree then there's problems with them eating up all the leaves (at least that's what I've read).
