The Japanese were big into the 'glass cannon' theory of weapons making. Light, mobile, fast, but couldn't take a hit. Airplanes with no armor and vulnerable fuel tanks, artillery light and mobile for it's size by paring the safety factor down to bare minimums, tanks that could be penetrated with rifle fire!
