My first attempt at multi-level shading. You're looking at the front of the mirror, the carving is on the back. The face is smooth and you can see through the design itself.

Thanks :) I've been wanting to try it for a while. You can't really achieve this effect on something like a pint-glass, because the distinction and shading comes from viewing the image through the smooth side of the glass, and its impossible to maneuver that much inside a glass.
It is. There's a real limit to the amount of detail you can do with surface etching. You can achieve a bit of shading and very limited layering but that's pretty much it. This technique gives you a lot more freedom - but like I said above, its really not suited for things like pint glasses.
Its not the roundness, its a question of maneuverability. Each layer of shading requires movement of the nozzle - closer in some parts, far away in others. You simply can't move your hand that much on the inside of a pint glass, so you stick to methods that work on on surfaces.
