There, I finally made an account on here XD Because of you.
So for my first comment ever on FA (and because I haven't commented on this pic on dA yet), I shall be negative:
First of all IT'S DILAPIDATED BROWN. You know how realism in games is parodied by brown+bloom? Well... you don't have bloom problems, but dull brown is definitely here XD I know you worked in the game industry but don't pick up their shitty color schemes! WC is not suited for realistic/aged colors. I'm not sure why you'd ever want to draw one of your more flamboyant and lively characters in sepia tones/old timey shitty brown photo style, but I really don't think it worked here XD His poor shirt! It used to be so blue before you dropped it in a patch of dirt D:
Because yeah, not only is it brown, but it's also so desaturated and dull! XD His hair, face and scarf look so dead and pale, it takes all the life out of his expressions and confident pose. The lack of contrast also doesn't help that, I feel that one you finished you pic, you just hit ctrl+U and upped the brightness to make it overall whiter XD After messing with you pic in Photoshop a bit, the lack of any kind of real shadows becomes really apparent.
I'm not too fond of pure black shadows, but your lineart/shadows here are really, really far away from that and that really bugs me XD Usually light shadows appear when there's a bright light and a lot of ambiance light reflected from the stuff around, like if you're outside or something... But here Coats is standing in cyan-ish black void an the lack of saturation just makes it seem like there's really little light around him, so the lack of dark tones doesn't work all that well :/ Maybe if you added some fog, the atmosphere of the pic would have worked better, I dunno XD
But, you know, once I un..brown/light/dull..ify your pic in Ps (I just darkened it with ctrl+L actually), I can appreciate the quality of the rest of the pic~ The shading is quite nice, the blue back lighting looks really good once it's re-saturated and that he shading is darker (makes it stand out more), especially on his legs and horns~ His hair is also quite nice X3 I just think it's a shame your nice shading is hidden under the layer of white and the brown tones XD
