Finally getting around to the last missing piece of my costume!
Just finished the tailfeathers and assembled them into a full tailfan today.
There are two mirror-image armatures, one for each of the outside tailfeathers. A spring at the top of the armatures provides the splaying action, since my muscles all pull in the wrong way right there. :p
To fold the tailfan there's two bicycle shifter cables that lead up to the wings inside my waistcoat. By pulling the cables I can (hopefully!) learn to fold the tailfan using wing muscles.
There's 11 feathers total, ranging up to about 26 inches in length. According to my hawk model, this gives the correct proportion of primary feather to tailfeather lengths. They extend just past my knees, which seems to be about right.
This next week I hope to get the connections made to the wings and try everything out. Might even be done in time for FC if I get lucky. ^v^
